Commonly Asked Questions about The Importance of Cable Cleats within Data Center Electrical Systems

Do I need to think about corrosion with cable cleats?
Panduit's stainless steel cable cleats (Trefoil, Locking Strap, Buckle Strap) are made of stainless steel 316L with strong anti-corrosion property. Corrosion will not be a concern even in extreme environments.
Why does the market continue to specify cleats with force rating at 1s even though max force occurs at 0.04 or 0.05 secs?
Whenever we see a 1s or 3s short circuit, it relates to the I²t of the cable (or switch gear). For cable, we refer to the amount of current that size conductor can take for that 1s or 3s period. This is a different short circuit requirement to the instantaneous forces during a phase to phase fault.
Will this be part of inspections standards specially in certifying data center tier?
It varies from project to project. More EPCs and Contractors are beginning to be aware of the importance of cleats in data centers. As such, they will need to know that specifying cleats that are compliant to IEC 61914:2015 is one of the first steps to protect their power systems. Going forward, inspections to ensure compliance will become a norm.
Is there also a cable bundling standard practice for communication cable like copper UTP and fiber optic cable?
There is no standard that specifically instructs on cable cleat installations. The NEC and The Cable Tray Institute provide guidelines for securing cable on horizontal and vertical runs, but cable cleat spacing is determined by the calculated forces during a short circuit fault.
Can your cable cleat install in standard wire tray?
Panduit has unique mounting brackets (eg. I-Beam, Top Hat and Round Type) that can help with the installation of cleat onto the cable tray. Check out our installation videos in the webpage.
For a vertical cable installation, the cable cleat will also hold the cable weight. Is there a specification of each type of cable cleat and how much weight it can hold?
IEC 61914:2015 requires an axial test to be performed to securely hold the cable in position. This test is carried out using the smallest cables in the range and at an elevated temperature. The vertical load is applied and held for 5 minutes. A maximum displacement of 5mm is allowed. All manufacturers should publish the axial / vertical performance on their data sheets.
How was the ordering of cleats, is there a minimum quantity of ordering?
You can order Panduit's cable cleats through your local distributors. The standard MOQ is 10 pieces / part number.
Is this already available in the market?
Yes, all Stainless Steel, Aluminum and Polymer cleats are available in the market.
What is the max cables size the cleat can secure?
SS Trefoil Clamp Style or CCSSTR - 69 mm; Buckle Strap Cleat (double loop) - 86 mm; Buckle Strap Cleat (trefoil Triple Loop) - 53 mm; Locking Strap Cleat (trefoil double loop) - 100 mm; Locking Strap Cleat (flat multicore double loop) - 195 mm. For cables with bigger OD sizes than the ones stated above, please approach your local Panduit distributor or Panduit Sales representative for more information.
Do you have stainless steel cable clip for solar farm to hold (4 x 6) mmsq cable?
Yes.
Does it make sense to use cable cleat for outdoor type fiber cables in the vertical riser spaces?
Fiber cables unlike power cables will not experience short circuit faults. Hence cable cleats are not needed.
We can still use cable tie instead of cable cleats . Why would customers agree to use it? What is the main benefit?
If you continue to use cable ties instead of proper cable cleats, your power system and infrastructure will be at risk as the cable ties are unable to secure the power cables during a short circuit fault.
Is this cable cleats only for electrical cable or can use for data cable also? For e.g: fiber optic cable?
Cable cleats are for power electrical cables only.
How about the warranty of the item? Is it lifetime warranty?
